Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses
April 2021
I had photographed Kate Sebag, who works at Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses, for the Empathy Museum back in June 2020, see blog post here. She asked me to help them out with some photography for a fundraiser that they were doing to hep pay staff and fund the Community Greenhouse project. This is definitely a space that is close to my heart and I have often visited this oasis in my local park and enjoyed its lush beauty, so I was happy to help out.
What I hadn’t realised on all those visits is quite what an important place it was for the volunteers. This is a highly competitive volunteering slot - with a long waiting list especially during lockdown when people had more time but number were limited due to Covid restrictions. The greenhouses are a relatively rare project in London and the volunteers were traveling from all over south london to enjoy the garden space and learn new horticulture skills. There day jobs may have been teacher, actors, computer programmers or tech entrepreneurs, but here they had a space to reset, and recharge their mental health.
Bellow is a small taster of some of the activity on the day that I visited. They also have lots of education project with local school and community groups, live music gigs, various making workshops as well as being open to the public over the weekends. Check them out here and maybe even give them some money if you like what they are doing.
