Nature inspired - Kaffe Fassett and Deal House
September 2023
Two home interiors shoots for the Guardian Saturday Magazine, but with very different style.
First up was knitting and textile design legend, Kaffe Fassett. I love ‘more is more’ so this was heaven. All the spaces in his house and studio were filled with his design, paintings and various items that he has collected over the years. Vegetable based crockery, with a particular subsection dedicated to cabbages. Collections of Ming style vases or laughing buddhas, his famous multicolour scarfs or quilts or the cushions with bold designs of animals, minerals or root vegetables.
Many of these designs were needlework patterns that were widely available for anyone to try, and were very popular in the 1960-80’s.
Colour and pattern visual gluttony!
The second house was Miria Harris’s holiday cottage in Deal on the Kent Coast. Miria, a garden designer and her partner Tom Harris, a chef, revived an old fishing cottage in Deal old town.
This was full of conservation lime based paints, nautical references and colour that were inspired by the sunrise in Deal.
I love colour clashes but I also love block colours and shapes, so this was just as much of a joy to shoot and definitely a very calming place to be in.
