Nicci Gerrard
April 2019
Sometimes on a shoot you get to have great conversations with someone really thought provoking.
The Observer New Review sent me to photograph Nicci Gerrard, an author and journalist who had just written a book about dementia. We chatted about how your own memories help shape our identity and how loosing those, disconnects you from your sense of self, and your ability to see yourself. Though she feels that people with dementia still retain some of their self, through other communications - music, dance, touch..
We also talked about how after loosing someone, their memory is distortion over time. How your image of someone is shaped by your memories of them, and how different and disconnected they can be, from the actual person.
She’s a really interesting writer and her book is well worth checking out.
